Every year, analyst Mary Meeker delivers her internet trends report and it is a must watch for all those interested in technology. Her report is 335 slides with tons of information.
Here are some of my favorite takeaways from her presentation:
- 3.4 billion internet users +10% year-over-year; India still growing quickly
- Online ad growth +22% (mobile is bigger than desktop for first time)
- Internet ad dollars (Google + Facebook =85% share) will surpass TV ad dollars in 2017
- “A lot of the future of search is going to be about pictures instead of keywords.” – Ben Silbermann, Pinterest CEO
- Voice search is starting to replace typing: 20% of mobile queries made via voice (5/16)
- Voice recognition is now 95% accurate
- 2.6 billion gamers globally vs 100 million in 1995 — Asia Pacific is the largest market
- Millennials: 27% have a significant preference for eSports (watching video game competitions)
- Spotify accounted for 20% of global music industry revenue vs 0% in 2008
- Internet penetration in India is still only 27% — therefore still growing quickly at 28%
Separate highlights on China:
- Time spent on mobile (55%) surpassed TV in 2016
- 700 million mobile users +12% growth in 2016
- China is the #1 provider of interactive gaming revenue
- 67% global share of on demand transportation (bike and car) trip volume; doubled last year
- WeChat Pay and AliPay are enabling mobile payments
